As the ‘robust removal of waste in any process’, lean is a broad subject indeed. Lean is not merely a manufacturing technique carried out in relative isolation. Rather, it is a business-wide application of measurement and subsequent reduction in variation in all that we do in business, and externally with our supply chains, customers, and partners. Lean starts with defining the strategic direction of the business, what it stands for and how it differentiates itself.

Once we get to that point, we need to have processes and measures in place that can deliver against the measures, and that are visible, so that we can all easily establish our progress at any time.
